Human-Centered AI Technologies for Supporting Life after Brain Injury

This use case focuses on the development of human-centered artificial intelligence systems designed to support individuals living with acquired brain injury (ABI) in their recovery and daily lives. The aim is to create intelligent technologies that adapt to each person’s cognitive, emotional, and physical abilities, promoting autonomy, rehabilitation, and social reintegration.

The project combines AI-driven behavioral analysis, cognitive modeling, and assistive interfaces to monitor users’ progress and provide tailored interventions. For example, smart applications can help patients retrain memory, attention, and executive functions through adaptive exercises that evolve according to the user’s performance. Computer vision and sensor-based monitoring allow for continuous observation of activity patterns, detecting fatigue, confusion, or changes in mood to adjust support strategies in real time.

Beyond rehabilitation, these systems integrate context-aware assistance tools —such as reminders, navigation guidance, or emotional feedback modules— that help individuals manage daily routines, communicate effectively, and maintain social engagement. The use of natural and empathetic interaction interfaces, including voice and gesture control, ensures accessibility and fosters a sense of agency and dignity.
