Social robots in education and care

Researchers at the University of Alicante have developed a dog-shaped robotic assistant designed to encourage physical activity and combat sedentary lifestyles among older adults, improving their quality of life through new technologies. Created within the ICAR Foundation’s 2023 Aging Research Aid Program and currently being tested at the Hogar Provincial de Alicante, the robot—named G02—acts like a guide dog, following users via a small clip attached to their clothing and interacting with them through a mobile device. Equipped with articulated legs, obstacle detection sensors, and real-time mapping, it can also perform actions like greeting, jumping, or dancing, and communicates using simple AI-based dialogue. Initial trials with ten participants aim to assess its impact on physical engagement and emotional well-being, with results intended to inform future social robotics studies focused on aging, ethics, and personalized assistance.
